From
The Editor
Wow! Can
you believe this is the 20th issue of Equine Niagara News? I can't. Well,
maybe I can. It seems I'm always at my computer working on the next
article, interview, photo, issue, something. But I love it. It keeps me
informed of everything happening in the area and by keeping me informed,
it keeps you my readers informed.
I still need help
however. I can't be everywhere, so please send me your stories and ideas
and I will try to get to them. Don't be afraid to toot your own horn so
to speak - tell your story. If it's horse related, I want to hear about
it.
This issue is a mile
long. I felt like I was writing a book, instead of a magazine. Every time
I turned around today, another call came in, another story popped up. And
thus the reason for the delay in getting this issue out. Mind you not
much of a delay, but evening instead of afternoon. I think, however you
will find it well worth the wait.
The tragedy in this
issue abounds. I don't know why there are so many horror stories when it
comes to horses. But on the same hand, many good stories as well, like
all that is happening at the Royal Winter Fair. And believe me there will
be more on this in the next issue. The November 26th issue will also
cover upcoming events at the OEF Conference and a feature story on
Kellie's Equestrian Centre - the new owners of Horses Unlimited. That is
quite the challenge Kellie and her husband have to face taking that on. I
wish them luck.
Finding homes for 70
or 80 horses in a couple of weeks is not going to be easy. So please, if
you have friends that do not receive this email forward it to them.
We can make a difference, by telling more and more of our equine friends.
And, do you know how excited I was to find out HU has been sold. A brief
blurb in this issue. Watch for a complete story in the next
issue.
This week was extra tough getting this issue complete being at the Royal
Winter Fair with one of my boarders. Yes, it was me that was supposed to
demonstrate the Wind Rider Challenge, but - being the chicken that I am,
I chickened out. Mainly because my own horse was injured trailering a
couple of weeks ago and is not yet show ready because of that, and partly
because the mare I was training to take would have had a fit over the
commotion. She's a young mare and hasn't been exposed to the kind of
excitement the Royal brings. Not to mention, we would have been showing
at the Spirit of the Horse ring in the main area of the Ricoh Colliseum -
thus, no place to really warm up the horse properly. She really needs to
warm up - more like wear out . She is full of energy that is for sure. Oh
well, maybe next year. Tori and her quarter horse mare, Sophie, however
did a great job of the demonstration in my place. It was a pleasure
seeing Bob and Suzanne from Two As One Horsemanship once again.
Other than that, I have been busy with a few other equine related matters
as well as operating my own farm. Although the season has come to a
slow-down, there is still so much to do for winter preparation. I am way
behind. Hopefully this weekend. But not until Saturday - tomorrow,
a hectic day and of course I'll be sorting at Fox Lair tomorrow evening.
Tough to miss a Friday night of sorting. Not sure which horse I'll be
taking yet, but I'll be there.
Well, enough about me, this magazine is supposed to be about you. So keep
the stories coming and I hope you enjoy this extremely lengthy issue. Note,
that I have been having technical difficulties with the website today, so
the website version may not be active until tomorrow sometime.
Grab a coffee, or something stronger and enjoy your read,
FORWARD TO A
FRIEND
I hope you enjoy this issue!
Until next time,
Debi Katsmar.

Herd
of Horses Need New Home After Deaths of Owners
Elliot Ferguson, Woodstock Sentinel-Review
After a fatal house fire at a
farm near Huntingford, a herd of approximately 70 horses need new
homes.
The
tragic death of two men in this fire - a father and son, left no
proviso for the horses, consequently the family of the men are seeking
help in finding new homes for them. Many are unbroke, but appear
to come from good bloodlines as you can see, many leopard appaloosas.
The family has only a few weeks before they will be forced
to take the horses to auction and would much prefer to sell them
privately before that option is utilized. Counting on the help of
friends and neighbours in this dire time, their hope is to re-home them
as quickly as possible.
Any one interested in purchasing one of these horses can contact Linda
Carlisle at 519-533-1662.

The
Spirit of the Horse is a Royal Tradition
One of the
most exciting Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF) traditions is the
Spirit of the Horse, taking place November 6-15, 2009. Managed by
the Ontario Equestrian (OEF), the Spirit of the Horse exhibit offers
RAWF patrons the unique opportunity to learn all about horses.
Spirit of the Horse 2009 will feature various equine breeds including
Arabians, Gypsy Vanners, American Saddlebreds, Canadians, Friesians,
Paso Finos, Percherons, miniature horses and donkeys, and everything in
between! In addition to breeds, visitors will have the
unique opportunity to meet the working horses from the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police and Toronto Police Mounted Unit, watch the precision of
the Canadian Cowgirls, play with Shorty Leggs the Rodeo Clown, and much
more!
One of the Demonstrations being held as part of the Spirit of the
Horse was CanAm and Home Hardware's Wind Rider Challenge. Equine
Niagara News and Saturn Stables had the opportunity to take part in
this demonstration on Tuesday, November 10th. It was a fun-filled day
with Tori Pennell demonstrating her and her horse's skills in the
variety of challenges offered by the Wind Rider. In the photo below
Tori ropes a cowboy, that cowboy being Bob Jeffrey's one of the two
clinicians that started the Wind Rider Challenge that is now touring
throughout Canada and the United States. For more information on
the Wind Rider Challenge visit www.twoasonehorsemanship.com . The next

From The Horse's

Cutting
Bred Horse sold for $3100 at the Bilyea Horse & Tack Auction in
Wainfleet
18 horses
were registered for auction at the Bilyea Horse and Tack Sale held on
October 30th at the Wainfleet Auction Centre. Nelson and wife Kathy
were hoping to bring a higher quality of horse, in turn bringing a
higher quality of bidder to the auction now operated by the Bilyea's.
And that they did.
"There were more bidders, many of whom I've never seen at the
Wainfleet Auction Centre's sale in the past." said Nelson in a
recent interview.
The cutting bred horse sold for a whopping $3100 - a far cry from bids
previously attained at this auction. While Nelson said "I wouldn't
call it a huge success by any means", the auction did do better
than in months past. An English saddle also sold for $300 - a first as
far as English saddles go at this auction as well.
The next auction will be held on November 28th, 10:30 start as usual.
Again, hoping the caliber of the horses and tack will be there, with a
new caliber of buyer as well.
For more information about the auction, Nelson can be reached at
519-225-2130.
R.A.O.
Sanctioned Roping Event Cancelled
The R.A.O.
Sanctioned roping event at Lil-Bit Ranch scheduled for this weekend

Horses
Unlimited Under
New Ownership
and Management
As of October
5th, Horses Unlimited is now owned and operated by Kellie Parlee and
her husband Ryan Collins. The couple took over the farm and have been
working diligently to restore the property and stables back to what
they once were. For now the stable is running as a boarding facility
and Kellie welcomes new boarders. Future plans include the return of a
lesson program and the trail rides. For now, concentration is being put
into rejuvenating the farm. Kellie brings a life-long history of horse
knowledge to the new facility called Kellie's Equestrian Centre. A
complete story in the next issue of Equine Niagara News will follow. In
the meantime, Kellie can be reached by calling 905-732-4004.
OEF Annual
General Meeting - A first - on-line voting is now

Profile: Horsin'
Around Discount Tack
Many
are unaware of a small tack shop in the heart of Ridgeway, owned and
operated by the Benner family, Harold, Diane and their daughter KC.
Horsin' Around Discount Tack was opened as a retail facility at 3860
Dominion Rd, Ridgeway in 2008 after being an on-line store since 2005.
The store offers a selection of bridles, bits, grooming and health care
supplies as well as blankets, and pads for both English and Western
riders. This month Diane has set to work expanding the giftware area of
the store for what she hopes to be a promising Christmas season. From a
musical rocking horse figurine to a fine selection of Finishing Touch
of Kentucky jewellery, you are sure to find something for you, your
horse or both. A new shipment of winter blankets for your horse
has just arrived. Diane and KC work hard at finding great deals
from their suppliers in order to pass on the savings to their
customers.
The on-line store started in 2005 was the Benner's way of helping the
family cover the expenses of KC's riding and horse. Over the years,
they enjoyed it so much and, after moving back to the Niagara Region
after a 25 year hiatus in Ottawa, they expanded the on-line
store to include the retail store.
The Benner family has been involved with horses for twenty-five years
and after returning to Niagara, that has not changed. Daughter KC also
has a riding stable called Cherry Hill Stables in Crystal Beach,
offering an arena, boarding and hopes to offer lessons shortly. KC is
currently searching for a quiet lesson horse/large pony . KC spent 2
years at Kemptville College learning the horse industry in order to
operate her farm and enjoy her horses.
Now, granddaughter, Caitlin also rides her two horses Starr and Dancer.
Caitlin competes at both the Bertie Willoughby and Port Colborne Saddle
Clubs. For Caitlin, the horses are a hobby, but she is
considering becoming a veterinary assistant as a career
choice.
You
may have seen the Benner's at the shows with their booth of tack and
giftware. Always great to be able to pick up a broken lead or halter at
the shows when that ill-fated accident happens. If you haven't stopped
in to say hello, Horsin' Around Tack welcomes you to do so. They would
really like to get to know the large equine family of Niagara Region.

2009 Season
Wow, its November! My God,
where did the time go? Well let me tell ya it went straight from
mid-summer to winter in a blink! Wanted to thank you for putting
us in your newsletter and sharing all of our great accomplishments over
the past few months. We had 30 horses at our last show which was
a total monsoon, of course Abizack stables had us taken care of with
some warm food and a nice dry arena to hold our show in. We even
had many horses with more than one rider, a pony addition to our group
and a huge collection of spectators to cheer us on.
To top it off, we had 94 tickets sold for our annual
banquet. We had a very nice lasagna dinner with both veggie and
regular dishes along with garlic bread, caesar salad and coffee and
tea. Our awards went off perfectly. I'd like to
congratulate all of those who were awarded which in fact was every
single person that showed. We had extra large ribbons to hand out
to each and every participant for the 2009 season along with the trophy
awards for points accumulations. There were over 30 prizes
donated to give away and an open bar for those so inclined.
We then had a young DJ come in to entertain us for the evening.
Wow, what a bash!! Hard to recognize some of those horse
folks, they look pretty impressive all cleaned up. Our sportsman
of the year went to Alicia Roy. We determined this by how many
times she yelled "yahoo", "good job", "nice
ride" and the many other compliments she paid to her team
mates. Great to see such support within our youth.
What an excellent show season and year end we had. We are voting
to add one more show next year if majority chooses to do so as well as
possibly a couple of trail rides and potluck dinners. We want to
thank Julia and Paul once again for holding our "youth fun day"
at their place. What a nice thing to do for the club.
We got to do some cattle sorting and fun games as well as a nice bbq
lunch for all.
Take care and hope to see y'all next season.

Niagara Cup Series Had It All

This year's debut of the Niagara Cup Series had it all. Good
shows and show management, good competition...and for the most
part, good weather for all four shows. Hats off to the show
committee for carrying on the respected tradition of the Niagara
Challenge Series...and offering four shows to meet the needs and wants
of local stables and riders.
Friday evening, October 30 was the awards
banquet to recognize participating stables, horses and ponies and
riders, for their successes in 2009. Riders from Sherwood Farm
were there in full force to celebrate the successful completion on our
first season as a competitive show barn. Thanks to Camberwell,
Cedar Ridge, Hunter Haven, and Red Ribbon...it was a terrific
evening. Kudos to you for putting on such a well run, and fun
social event. The CAW Hall was jam packed, the food
delicious...and the ribbons and awards classy...befitting of the
calibre of shows held over the summer. Already we are anxiously
looking forward to the 2010 showing season.
To blow our own horns just a
little, Sherwood Farm was well represented in the ribbons. Our
riders, some of whom had never participated before and others seasoned
veterans of the Niagara Challenge Series...came home with several
overall champions and reserve champions. And every one of our
riders who participated in the four shows came home with at least one
of the gorgeous ribbons.
We are very fortunate in this area
to have such a show circuit. The fact that they are run by such
seasoned show people as Tammy LeBlanc, Jim Corbett, Diana Giles and
Leslie McCormick ensures that competitors have an excellent and
professional venue for putting their talents to the test.
Sherwood Farm would very much like to add to the circuit and has put in
a bid to host another in the series. As many of you know,
Sherwood Farm is the home of well known and respected Willomar
Farm. Willomar and the Kavanagh family were instrumental in the
original Niagara Challenge and Grassroots Shows of yester year.
The farm traditionally hosted the first of the Challenge Shows due to
the well drained ring which could be used early in the season.
We hope our bid will be accepted and local
stables will have yet another of these top quality shows to add to the
roster of "must attend" events for 2010.
