Neurotropic Equine Herpes Virus-1 Status Update - June 14
Equine Canada's Health and Welfare Committee is sharing an update on the EHV-1 status in the Western Provinces from a conference call June 13. Participants included the Chief Provincial Veterinarian, members of Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, faculty from the University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine, provincial animal laboratory veterinarians and local equine practitioners.
There has been one new case of nEHV-1 reported since the last telephone conference call on June 8th, 2011. Read more
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Horse owners and organizations nationwide are watching anxiously and some are shutting down shows and other events in an effort to keep a deadly horse virus outbreak that began in Utah from spreading beyond a handful of Western states and Canada.
So far, at least 17 horses in Idaho, Utah, Colorado, California, Washington and Canada have been infected with the highly contagious Equine Herpes Virus-1, and at least three have died. The disease poses no threat to people but is easily spread among horses, alpacas and llamas because it can be airborne and transmitted by touch or by sharing feed, brushes, bits and other equipment. Horse Advocates Call Foul on Food Network
Chicago (EWA) – Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA) joins its Canadian partner, Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC) in calling for the withdrawal of an episode scheduled to air Monday, May 16 on the Food Network’s program Top Chef Canada.
The program features “French Cuisine” including horse meat and foie gras, angering both horse advocates and animal welfare groups across the globe. The timing of this episode coincides with CHDC’s May Equine Awareness campaign. Read more

OFAC and AGCare seeking new name for amalgamated organization
(Guelph) April 19, 2011 – A top prize of $500 is up for grabs in a contest to name the new organization that will take effect when the Ontario Farm Animal Council (OFAC) and Agricultural Groups Concerned about Resources and the Environment (AGCare) join forces.
Crystal Mackay, Executive Director, said, “The challenge is to define a name for this new group that is clear and easily understood by the non-farming public who is more interested in food than farming practices. CAN PRAXIS, a new program for Canadian Forces Veterans, is based near Rocky Mountain House, AB. It offers practical opportunities for veterans to "recharge, regain and renew" their lives after experiencing traumatic stress, for example, in Afghanistan. It compliments existing therapeutic programs by offering two components: conflict-reducing communication training with Steve Critchley, who has 28 years of service with the Canadian Forces and who is now an international mediator.
