"Keep Spurring 'til the Whistle Blows" by George Hewitt

keep spurringNearly a year after receiving a copy of George Hewitt's book "Keep Spurring 'til the Whistle Blows", I finally got around to reading it. Not because I didn't think it would be interesting, just because of a lack of time. Since reading is limited to that half an hour before I drop off to sleep for the night, it takes a while to finish a book.

Enough about me and back to the book.

The cover states, "Canada's #1 Cowboy Adventure" and an adventure it was - if only all our lives were so interesting. The cover also states "A breathtaking true life adventure with mystery and intrigue", and I would have to agree with that as well. It's not your typical novel, I'll give you that, but the story keeps you reading.

What I found most interesting about this Canadian cowboy's story is how many people he mentions in the book that A) I know or know of; and B) how many of those people are still active in the equine industry today after helping to make that industry what we have come to know it as now. One of those people mentioned several times throughout the book is Niagara's Tom Bishop so you can see why the interest - and there is so much more.

From bull and bronc riding, thoroughbred and standardbred racing and the UK's CAnadian Way of Life Trade Exhibition and Rodeo, this story has a little of everything -- even roller derby -- now there's a blast from the past.

Much of this book took place in about the time I was born, but some of the people are still going strong today. It was truly a fascinating read, filled with history that hits close to home and it truly is a story of a cowboy's dream. George Hewitt was born in Windsor, Ontario in 1935. He has led a succesful life as a cowboy, sports announcer and now as an author. I can hardly wait to read his next book "Keep Spurring The Sequel" which I just ordered.
