In 1982, Joan Gay, Jackie Sentineal, Nicky Aitkens, and Ellen Campbell formed the Upper Canada Trail Riders Club which in 1990 became incorporated as UPPER CANADA EQUESTRIAN ASSOCIATION. We owe a great debt to their initiative and foresight that formed the Upper Canada Heritage Trail and for the well managed organization we have today.

Our Mandate:

1) To establish safe horseback-riding trails throughout the Niagara Peninsula.
2) To develop, expand, improve and preserve existing public trails.
3) To promote the proper and responsible use of public trails.
4) To give trail riders a safe place to ride in harmony with other users.
5) To call the attention of local, regional and provincial governments to the need for the preservation, improvement and expansion of public trails.
6) To do all such acts that are incidental or conducive to the attainment of the above objects with the philosophy that public recreational trails should be multi-purpose with equestrian privileges. With the pressure of population expansion, there is an increasing need for inexpensive recreational outlets in the peninsula, therefore, it is important to preserve public lands which can provide trails for future generations while the land is still publicly owned.

June 7, 2009 couldn't have been a better day for the Upper Canada Equestrian Association's (UCEA) Annual Nicky Aitken Memorial Trail Ride for Breast Cancer.  Not too hot, not too cold, a few drops of rain in the morning. Just enough to make everyone look to the sky to see what was coming next. And nothing more came, except sunshine and a few clouds here and there.

The event was held at Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery in St. Catharines with the ride heading out into the Shorthills Provinical Park for 2 hours and back to the winery for the after-festivities. The event was extremely well organized for the amount of horses in attendance with no one getting lost on the ride and all arriving back safe and sound.

When all was said and done, 64 riders participated in the ride raising a whopping $10,560.34 for Breast Cancer  Prevention and Community Research. Organizers had raised a phenomenal amount of prizes to be won by participants with three major prizes being offered for the most money raised for this cause. Ron Bell won the Western Show Saddle sponsored by Port Pontiac Buick GMC and Horseworld with pledges totally $2215, Debi Katsmar $2205 in pledges got her the 3-day cattle drive in Quesnal, BC next spring offered by Blackwater Spruce Ranch, and Loretta Valstar received the bareback saddle pad from Reign Equestrian and Athletics for third place. This year a new contest was added - the most unique breed participating in the ride. Louise Michener received a portrait package from Stephen Dominick for her winning entry of a Gypsy Vanner. Thousands of dollars in other prizes were awarded to all participants.

The day offered a great ride, lots of prizes and also new this year was the addition of a band playing while riders were returning to the winery. Barnhouse Static played fabulous tunes and kept us all entertained until the awarding of the prizes.

The event's success was contributed to the many months of planning and promotion, the generosity of the event sponsors, great weather and most of all to all the volunteers that helped make the event run smoothly and without incident.

There was one glitch a few days prior to the ride with a lack of food for the event as the food supplier unfortunately had to cancel attending at the last minute. Organizers wish to thank the Brian Smith of St. Catharines for contributing the money to purchase the food and, both the Smith and Waugh family for preparing all the food for everyone to enjoy. There were sandwiches, veggies and dip, chips, cookies, pop, water and yes, even horse treats. A fabulous job for last minute arrangements. In fact, they prepared so much food, there was tons leftover. The balance of the food was donated to Woman's Place after the ride.

The day was filled with stories of how cancer has touched people's lives, and just as many horse stories. What a day!

cancer ride
The Upper Canada Equestrian Association's (UCEA) annual Nicky Aiken Memorial Ride for Breast Cancer is looking like it will be a huge success. With 1000s of dollars in prize donations accumulated for the riders in the event, thanks to very generous sponsors throughout Canada and the U.S., the organization is expecting greater numbers riding in the event.

UCEA has been organizing this annual trail ride for almost 20 years, having raised in excess of $40,000 over the years. This year's goal is to raise $10,000. The previoius best for one year is approximately $6500. Organizers have been getting enquiries from throughout Niagara Region and Toronto as to how to participate in the event. If the weather is good, it is expected to have approximately 70-80 horses riding in the event that starts at Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery. The Speck family has graciously opened their property to UCEA to host the ride that will take riders through the vineyards and into the Shorthills Provincial Park.

The ride will be approximately 2 hours long, with participants collecting sponsorships for the Breast Cancer Research and Education Fund. At the end of the ride, all riders will once again assemble at the winery for entertainment by Kathy Evans, have some food and participate in the awarding of prizes.

The grand prize for the person that raises the most donations is a $1800 Western Show Saddle generously donated by Bill McGee of Port Pontiac Buick GMC and Breck Foerstner of HorseWorld Emporium. This year, a new prize is being given for the person riding with the most unique breed of horse in the event as well. There are many prizes to be awarded throughout the day.

A meeting is being held on June 4th, at 7pm for any one wishing to volunteer time for the day to keep the event organized, safe and functional for all participating. The meeting takes place at Saturn Stables, 2783 Oille St., St. Catharines, ON L2R 6P7.

Organizers are still seeking more prizes for the participants as well as monetary donations for the Breast Cancer Research and Education Fund. Prize donations can be sent to Saturn Stables or call 905-684-6030 to arrange pick up. Monetary donations should be made payable to Breast Cancer Research and Education Fund and can be mailed to Saturn Stables as well. Or you can donate via PayPal at the top of this screen on the right hand side. Donations of over $20.00 will be issued a tax receipt by the Breast Cancer Research and Education Fund. Thank you in advance for your generous contributions.

The Upper Canada Equestrian Association wishes to thank all that have helped in making this event the huge success it appears to be thus far. For further information, please call 905-684-6030 or email UCEACancerRide@equineniagaranews.com.
